Reports from the 2011 Season

1st XI

The 1st XI survived in Division 2 thanks to an unbeaten final 4 games of the season.

After winning the opening 2 fixtures of the year, Cam were on the wrong end of a number of close games and found themselves struggling at the wrong end of the table. Injuries and unavailability to key players made it difficult but, even in defeat, Cam managed to pick up valuable bonus points and these proved vital.

Cam lost close matches against Kings Stanley, Corse & Staunton, Oldlands and Cheltenham Civil Service, but then from early August, Fairford, Ruardean Hill and BEW Crescent were all beaten and there was a tie away at Cheltenham Civil Service and Division 2 cricket was secured for the 2012 Season.

2nd XI

2011 has been another very successful season for Cam Second Eleven. Promotion to the Gloucestershire County League Division 5 was assured two weeks before the end of the season. Sadly top spot could not be achieved possibly due to the weather causing some matches against weaker teams to be cancelled.

The spirit in the team has remained high throughout the season and it has been particularly rewarding to see younger players being selected for the first team not just to make up the numbers but on ability and merit. Both Paul Belton with the bat and George Dolling with the ball have done very well since being called up to the first team and this in turn has made spaces available in the seconds for players like Alex Ballard, Paul Ealey and latterly Kit Dixon to become established in the team. Performances worth noting in the year are of course not exhaustive but with the bat, Fin Dixon has personally demolished Stone Seconds both home and away with excellent batting, scoring an unbeaten 129 at Cam and 101 at Stone. Ryan Malpass also bagged his first ton of the end at the end of the season despite showing he could have done it very early on this year. With the ball, Alex Ballard has shown he can open an attack when required but the bowling has backed up the batting with the more seasoned players being highly successful. Steve Ballard, Steve Rice and Matt Tipper have all shown that straight bowling gets results.

No doubt next year will be a tough one. Division 5 has always been a difficult one to remain in. Look what happened to Birdlip and Newent last year: straight back down. This will be compounded by the County League restructuring. But the hard work of the third and fourth team captains and a successful youth policy will, I hope, mean that Cam Second Eleven continues in its successful rise as the one of the highest ranked second teams in the county.

Thanks for all who have supported us on and off the field. Denise Hancock for teas, Marlon Zoglowek for umpiring. Also our faithful group of supporters who have turned out in what can only be described as a damp summer.

3rd XI

An excellent season with the thirds ending fifth in a League of 10,  holding their own against all other teams with only Leonard Stanley proving to be too strong in both games. Winning 8 and losing 7 with 3 cancellations.

The team had a good mixture of both mature and youth cricketers with many new young faces making their debuts at senior level some as young as 13 & 14 showing a high level of skill and confidence. Players who started the season at third team level moved up to the seconds, managing to hold down a place on a regular basis thus providing a good basis for competition within the club.

A mention should go to Ryan Rice who was awarded Stroud League player of the Month for July with a string of 50's and some outstanding bowling which helped the team win five games in a row, something unprecedented at third team level.
